For most people, the month of November signals the start of end-of-year parties and the imminent arrival of the jolly round man who’ll soon be sliding down the chimney. But for a group of us at Reckon, and many more around the globe, November is a time to forget the razor and let the mo grow!
Yep that’s right, it is Movember!
Each November a group from Reckon staff sign up to grow their facial hair to raise funds and awareness for prostrate and testicular cancer as well as mental health. It is Movember’s vision to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health – and so growing a moustache to change your face could start a conversation that changes a life.
Mo Bros and Mo Sistas
The generous guys who are involved, also known as “Mo Bros”, have become walking talking billboards for Movember. By growing Mo’s this month they’re prompting conversation about the often ignored issues of men’s health everywhere they go.
For the first time this year we also have a “Mo Sista” involved at Reckon – that’s me. Whilst a Mo Bro can grow a moustache, it’s a little different for the Mo Sista! Mo Sista’s support Mo Bros through their mo growing journey; whether it’s a colleague, friend, family member or partner. Mo Sistas are also committed to raising awareness of men’s health issues and much needed funds for men’s health.
I asked one of my Mo Bros Neil Rustlidge who works in Reckon’s QA department why he’s involved. He said, “Movember is a great cause for men’s health. I have family and friends that have experienced or know someone that has experienced these health issues. Getting men talking about their health issues can only have a positive outcome.”
I chose to be a Mo Sista this year because I have a lot of men in my life – a son, a husband, a brother, a father and lots of male friends; therefore I felt it was important to be a part of starting the conversation about men’s health issues that have been ignored for way too long. If it saves one of their lives then it is worth it.
